After a Flood
- Do not drive through a flooded area. More people drown in their cars than anywhere else.
- Avoid flood water. It may be contaminated by oil, gas, or sewage. The water may also be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines.
- Stay away from moving water. Moving water only six inches deep can sweep you off your feet.
- Stay away form downed power lines and report them to the power company immediately. Electric current passes easily through water.
- Donate money to disaster relief organizations. Unless specifically requested, do not donate food, clothing or other personal items.
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and clean water if you come in contact with flood waters. Listen to news reports to learn whether the community’s water supply is safe to drink.
- Watch for animals. They lose their homes in floods and may seek shelter in yours.
- If your property has been damaged, call the insurance company or agent who handles your flood insurance policy right away to file a claim.
- Do not go in a building if there is any chance of the building collapsing.
